- Create a Safe Space During the Move
As you’re packing, make a space for your pet that stays constant throughout the packing process. Put their bed in a low-traffic area or room away from boxes and movers coming in and out.
2. Schedule a Vet Appointment
Vets know a lot about helping pets manage stressful situations. They are an excellent resource for questions about reducing your pet’s anxiety levels. During your vet visit, here are some things to ask about:
- Double-check that all vaccinations are up to date and obtain a current rabies vaccination certificate (if needed).
- Make sure your pet is healthy and stocked up on any regular prescriptions so that you are less likely to have to make an emergency visit during your move.
- Discuss potential stress-reduction tactics or supplements to help ease anxiety.
- Request a copy of your pet’s medical files and records if you are moving away from your current neighborhood or city and will need to switch vets.
- Ask your vet for a recommendation for a new vet if you haven’t found one in your new community yet.
- Ask about additional tests or vaccinations if moving out of state.
3. Pack a separate emergency moving bag for your pet.
During the move, make sure you have easy access to medications, favorite toys and special treats to help calm your pet.
4. Pet-proof your new home before your pet arrives & then familiarize them to their new space
Consider pet safe plants, doors they can get in and out of, fencing your yard and more. Once they have arrived at their new home, give them a tour and create a safe space for them to get to throughout the day.
